The Garden tool re-design project is a culmination of the work and skills gained over the past year. I stared with a trip to a local hardware store to get a general idea of the market and products I will be competing with. My classmates and I made up questionnaires to get a more in-depth understanding of products that lack in certain functions or aesthetics. Although the questions were relevant – I found it difficult to record all the information. From What I did find however was interesting and thought provoking. When I ask what is the most popular and least popular garden tool, the assistant said in general everything in stock sells relatively well – If they don’t the line is discontinued. He also said that customers have a general idea of what they are going to buy before they get to the shop so the less recognizable tools, although they are sometimes better or cheaper don’t sell as well as the everyday garden trowel and folk. This shows that less cognitive tools are sometimes harder to sell even though they are sometimes better. I see this as an opportunity as a designer to improve the cognition of the tool I choose to re-design.
I have decided to re-design a garden weeder as they have a variety of functions, designs and aestetics.
Here are some examples of typical gardening sets with a weeder included:
